I'm not an expert but if you were really traumatized (a war, physical or sexual abuse, etc.), you have to work through your experience and reframe it in order to move on.
Unfortunately, today everyone is offended by minor things which is a totally different thing.
Strangely enough, our body has an immense capacity to heal - after the bombing in my country, I would jump every time I heard a sound behind me. A few years later and many times it proved not to be a bomb, this fear of sudden noises went on its own because my mind got convinced not every sound from your back means danger.
Still, I'd suggest a therapist for serious cases because the toxic conviction from the experience stays in subconscious although the body somehow "healed" the reaction.
